Over 6000 runners entered the 2008 Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running which took place today, starting their events in brilliant autumn sunshine with the support of hundreds of spectators lining the route.

Fifty five different nationalities were represented in today's events, with athletes from as far afield as Australia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Trinidad, Ukraine, USA Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

Kerr Arthur, UK Marketing Director Baxters, commented: "It's been a wonderful day and it's fantastic that so many people took part, well done to all the runners. On behalf of Baxters I would like to say a special thanks to everyone who supported the day and the charities associated with the event."

Malcolm Sutherland, Event & Race Director said: "It was great to see so many people taking part in the Festival of Running – we were delighted to see runners from the local area, across Scotland, the rest of the UK and overseas joining this weekend's events. A huge thank you is due to all the volunteers and charities for their tremendous support in contributing to the event's success."

The Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running attracts an additional £1,357,000, to the economy of the local area, as runners, supporters and the local community head to Inverness and the Loch Ness area for the weekend's events.
Hundreds of supporters turned out along the final miles of the event route to cheer on the runners as they approached the final straights into Queens Park Stadium in Inverness, the finish line for all three distances. The stadium was the focus of a full programme of entertainment for runners and spectators including The Brock Inspectors, East Ross Schools Pipe Band, and children's activities including a bouncy castle and face painting, bringing a real carnival atmosphere to the finish arena. Quality Highland produce was also available including hog roast, stovies, porridge, and the famous 'smoothie cycle'.

As well as elite Scottish, international and club runners, Baxters Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running is also popular with runners raising money for charity. A massive £436,150 was raised from last year's event, benefiting hundreds of charities and communities across Scotland and the UK. Baxters Loch Ness Marathon has six nominated charities – Highland Hospice, Leonard Cheshire, Macmillan Cancer Support, Maggie's Cancer Care Centres, Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Scottish Community Foundation – and runners can opt for one of them or choose from over 40 other associated national and Scottish charities.

Ezekiel Cherup, winner of the Baxters Loch Ness Marathon said: "It was a cold start and a challenging route but it warmed up as the course went on to give a great finish. I really enjoyed my run today!"

Banuelia Katesigwa, winner of the women's Baxters Loch Ness Marathon said: "It was great to hear all the people cheering along the course – it really adds to the enjoyment of the run."
